Honoring Herman T. Gamboa, one of the founders of STI College

The education community in the Philippines mourned the loss of a visionary leader, Herman T. Gamboa, one of the founders of STI College. Gamboa's passing marks the end of an era but leaves behind a legacy that has transformed countless lives through education.

Gamboa was not just a businessman, he was a pioneer with a profound commitment to education. In the early 1980s, amidst a rapidly evolving landscape of technology and education, Gamboa recognized the need for quality IT education in the Philippines. Alongside his partners – Edgar H. Sarte, Benjamin A. Santos, and Augusto C. Lagman –he laid the groundwork for what would become STI College – a trailblazing institution that would shape the future of tech-driven education in the country.

STI College emerged as a beacon of innovation, offering cutting-edge programs in information technology and related fields. Gamboa’s foresight and determination propelled the institution to the forefront of the Philippine education sector, earning widespread recognition for academic excellence.

Through his active involvement and guidance, STI College became not only a place of learning but also a community where students were nurtured, encouraged, and inspired to pursue their dreams.

Pioneering paths in business, education, and beyond

Gamboa's multifaceted career is a testament to his remarkable vision, determination, and unwavering commitment to business, education, and philanthropic endeavors. With an impressive resume that boasts numerous accomplishments, he has left an indelible mark in various industries.

As the founder and chairman of Data Center Design Corporation (DCDC), he pioneered innovative solutions in building data centers, providing essential equipment and technological infrastructure crucial for powering companies' operations and enhancing their capabilities. His leadership and strategic directions have enabled the successful completion of numerous large-scale data center installations across the country and in major establishments including the Allied Bank building, Metrobank, and Philamlife Tower, among others.

DCDC’s humble beginnings mirror the life journey of Gamboa. He was only three when his father died and had to be brought up alone by his mother. Despite these challenges, he excelled academically, graduating with honors from high school. Determined to pursue higher education, he enrolled in evening classes at Mapua Institute of Technology, where he juggled the roles of a working student as a “bodegero” and stock clerk during the day and a full scholar at night.

While studying, Gamboa came across an advertisement in the newspaper from the prestigious American firm, Burroughs Ltd. Seizing the opportunity, he applied and was hired as a mechanical technician. Through a series of competitive examinations, he earned the chance to undergo computer training in London, UK and Detroit, Michigan, USA. Gamboa's pioneering spirit in the field of computer studies marked him as a Filipino catalyst in this domain. He dedicated 17 years to Burroughs, culminating in his role as Engineering Head before founding DCDC in 1983.

The same year DCDC was established, Gamboa co-founded STI College formerly known as Systems Technology Institute on August 21, 1983, a pioneering academic institution that has revolutionized IT education in the Philippines. His vision in addressing the high demand for technically skilled professionals has provided countless individuals with the opportunity to pursue quality education and build successful careers in information and communications technology.

Beyond his entrepreneurial pursuits, Gamboa became deeply involved in philanthropic activities, notably with Rotary International where he has dedicated decades of service. His leadership roles within Rotary, including serving as a past governor and holding positions such as Editor-in-Chief of the Philippine Rotary Magazine, highlight his dedication to making a positive impact on communities both locally and globally.

Through initiatives like the Rotary Street Children Foundation and Rotary Home Foundation, both of which work with Gawad Kalinga and ANCOP, he has worked tirelessly to provide homes for the less fortunate and supported various humanitarian causes.

Despite the demands of his career and philanthropic endeavors, his dedication to his family was a cornerstone of his life and values. He always made time for his loved ones, cherishing moments with his family and prioritizing their well-being.

Despite his busy schedule and countless commitments, Gamboa always made time for his family. One of the lessons he imparted to his children, after all, is that family always comes first

As we bid farewell to a man with many hats, let us remember his remarkable legacy and the profound impact he has made. His visionary leadership, passion, and commitment to education will continue to resonate within the halls of STI College and far beyond, inspiring and motivating future generations to strive for excellence and embrace the transformative power of education.
