5 Steps to Determine your Personality and Skills

June 8, 2022

As your education progresses, deciding on what strand or program to take can be overwhelming. From the handful of programs written in brochures to the complex course outlines attached, the process can be quite a challenge.

But did you know that making such a difficult choice is just the least of your worries? Building character and developing aptitudes always come first before that big decision, and it is something that does not come easy too.

Fret not for you are not alone in this expedition. Here are five basic steps to help you determine the right personality and skill sets that will be essential in choosing who you want to be for the rest of your life.

Step 1: Seek advice

As Albert Einstein famously said, "The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing.

Everyone has their own story. Seeking advice from well-experienced people is the first step to gathering better ideas. As a fledgling, approaching professionals is not necessarily needed, but they can tell a wider story.

Basically, you could learn from the stories of your parents, mentors, and even friends! Never be afraid of asking questions. Remember, being coachable takes no amount of skill and only requires eyes and ears.

Step 2: Determine what triggers your happiness

Does being in the kitchen bring out the best in you? You might be a world-renowned chef!

“Find something you love to do, and you’ll never have to work a day in your life.”

As cheerful as the saying sounds, this may be a tricky part. After all, your life does not operate on happiness alone. It is a mixture of every abstract feeling available in the dictionary.

Nevertheless, listing things you love to do can be a good start. Things you will make time for and willingly do even on rainy days. Just be careful not to put too much though, as some activities listed may be better off as hobbies and may not lead to the best career path.

Step 3: Evaluate

Having a journal can help keep your self-discovery organized. Once you’re successful, it will be nice to look back on some of them!

After listing down the activities you love, analyze each and try to find which one brings out the best in you. You’ll be surprised as you could turn out to be multi-talented and good with more than one thing.

Like in Step 2, choose from the list the things that puts a smile on your face even when you do not feel like smiling at all.

Step 4: Hone Skills

As the saying goes, “practice makes perfect”. Stephen Curry didn’t master his long range with one shot, he had to make thousands.

Now that you have narrowed down your list, working on what you have assessed so far is the next ideal step to discovering your capabilities.

Make time to try each and see if it makes your heart happy. It does not have to be perfect. Excellence, after all, also commits mistakes. It is a constant development!
