STI Holds Convention for Future Global Pinoys
True to its commitment of educating Filipino students on technology-related trends, STI, the Philippines' largest network of colleges, recently held its 9 th National Information Technology Convention (NITC), invading major cities in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
Dubbed "The Global Pinoy of the 21 st Century", this year's convention enumerated competencies that have made Filipinos globally competitive and highlighted our clear potential in providing world-class knowledge workers not only in local shores but also in global fronts. During the event, experts from the ICT industry discussed the latest trends and gadgets that affect technology in the blink of an eye. Topics included "The Emerging Trends in ICT: Challenge of the Future, "Face to face across the wires, real time, anytime" a topic that discussed Video Conferencing and the last topic "Be at par with the World' s best, what does it take to be a Global Pinoy"
Actual demonstrations also provided a focal point of the event. MICRODATA SYSTEMS & MANAGEMENT INC., for instance, which supplied the required video conferencing hardware through their TANDBERG video con cameras and multimedia back up during the convention, gave the audience a glimpse of what we may achieve through video conferencing. On the other hand, INNOVE COMMUNICATIONS, which served as the Internet Service Provider or ISP for the whole convention, made the video conferencing demo a huge success by providing fast Internet connection.
"While communication and information are at the very heart of the educational process, it is ICT that greatly assists us in providing learning opportunities in the Information Age," said Mhel Garrido, Events Manager from the STI Events Management Division. "The NITC is our way of influencing the future generation of Filipino students to plan and mastermind their careers. Through this event, we know that STI will be able to help them prepare themselves to be part of the so-called future knowledge-based society," he adds.
Another component of the NITC is the High School Caravan, which, like the IT convention, is also an educational and entertaining primer on ICT. Its main objective is to inform high school students about the career opportunities in ICT or ICT-enabled professions. This year's Caravan drew more than 120, 000 high school students nationwide and had successful professionals as speakers. Topics discussed were The Digital Workforce and Digital Arts in focus.
"The STI convention is very unconventional in that it was created not just to educate but to entertain. Unlike other conventions, the NITC was presented in a fun and entertaining manner. We even invited celebrity guests to grace the event," Garrido added.
The NITC is an annual convention intended for STI students who wish to gain more knowledge on their courses, as well as fourth year high school students who wish to explore a career in ICT and other ICT-enhanced professions such as nursing, education and business administration. These courses are now being offered to a number of STI outlets nationwide.
