STI is Now Game-ready!
Strengthening its sports program starting with basketball, STI Education Services Group, Inc. (STI) spearheaded the STI Basketball Coaching Clinic on May 30 to June 1, 2016 at the STI Academic Center in Ortigas-Cainta. With 27 coaches from select STI campuses in Luzon, the training aimed to upgrade the basketball knowledge of the participants through three days of sessions.
It included topics on basic coaching, conditioning, skills development, and strategizing day-to-day practices. Eric Gonzales, Head Coach of Phoenix Petroleum Fuel Masters and Assistant Coach for GlobalPort Batang Pier, brought with him a wealth of coaching knowledge and coaching experiences that he gained working in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). Touching on the topic of dexterity in the sport was former Coca-Cola Tigers’ Strength and Conditioning Coach Julio Veloso, who also shared helpful points on how the coaches can maximize the strength of their players and more importantly, give the players conditioning drills to make them ready for any game.

Former PBA player Richie “Velvet Touch” Ticzon, who is now an Assistant Coach for the Phoenix Petroleum Fuel Masters in the PBA Developmental League and Assistant Manager of the FEU Tamaraws, showed the trainees his tricks in shooting the ball from any distance, a skill he is known for. On the other hand, two-time PBA Mythical Five selectee and National Team lead point guard Olsen Racela promotes discipline and hard work among the coaches and players, and shared that patience in one of the most important things a basketball team should have. The trainees also visited the practice sessions of the Phoenix Petroleum Fuel Masters and the PBA Team GlobalPort Batang Pier to see how they play and train on the court.
“As coaches we have to explain to our players why we do what we do. We don’t just tell them to do what we tell them to do but we also want them to see the reason behind everything we instruct them and realize the bigger picture. That serves as their guiding principle in and out of the court,”shares Eric Gonzales.
The clinic covered almost all the basic ingredients in creating a sports program focusing on developing a neophyte basketball team to a powerhouse squad. With the key point they learned to up their game, STI’s basketball coaches will now be able to develop skills and talents of their respective players to become exemplary athletes of the sport.
