Innovative Works Awarded as Most Outstanding Theses

For college students, their thesis is the culmination of all their applied learning and knowledge through their years in school. Often, it is filled with challenges and hardships as they discover a wider range of their capabilities and what their ideas could amount to. For some, it is an opportunity to come up with innovations borne from playful yet novel ideas. 

To recognize the young visionaries and their exceptional outputs, STI recently held the Search for Most Outstanding Thesis (MOST) Awards, an annual national level commendation for outstanding thesis projects of students under the BS Computer Science and BS Computer Engineering programs across the STI network.

Besting various nominations and entries from across the STI network,  a groundbreaking bus passenger assistance system and an interactive learning tool for Physical Education classes were proclaimed the grand winners for the 2018 MOST Awards for BS Computer Engineering and BS Computer Science programs, respectively.   

The winning theses were chosen by an esteemed panel of judges from the industry and the discipline, namely the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), Philippine Society of Information Technology Educators (PSITE), Institute of Computer Engineers of the Philippines (ICPep), and the Mechatronics and Robotics Society of the Philippines.

The winning teams received a certificate of recognition and a cash prize amounting to PhP20,000.


A Public Bus Transport Solution

With the emerging challenges in the bus transportation system in the Philippines, a group of BS Computer Engineering students from STI College – Balagtas presented a sensible and ground-breaking solution for a more convenient public bus commute.

Inspired by the proposed project of the Department of Transportation and the Point-to-Point (P2P) bus service, the “Bus Passenger Assistance” was introduced by Hector Galvez II, Jommel Christopher Hilario, Jefferson Masangkay, and Lorraine Guillen Norbe under the supervision of their thesis adviser Mr. Santiago Liwanag. 

It all started when our group brainstormed about the importance of being informed about a bus’ estimated time of arrival for commuters. Eventually, more useful features were suggested and brought up to the discussion until we finally came up with the idea and package it to an all-in-one functional software that offers necessary details about a bus for an improved commuting time.

The project is an automated and user-friendly system intended to help bus passengers traveling along Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue (EDSA). Through an LCD monitor in bus stops and terminals, the Bus Passenger Assistance provides commuters with the status of incoming bus units, including the bus number, its current whereabouts, route, the estimated time of arrival (ETA), and available seats on the vehicle. Commuters can also access this information on demand via text message.

This unique innovation uses smart cards (regular cards, cards for senior citizens, persons with disability, students, and children) as a mode of transaction as it stores and transmits data using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), plus a mini thermal printer that issues receipt.

“Moreover, the system also offers easier workload for bus conductors as the device will automatically deduct fare and apply corresponding discounts from the passengers’ smart cards, thus eliminating the manual issuance of tickets and fare collection,” Lorraine ended.

The microcontroller module is installed inside the bus where the RFID, GPS receiver, and mini thermal printer are all connected while the GPS acquires the coordinates of the bus to the cloud to provide the ETA.


Modernizing Physical Education

In line with STI’s mission statement to provide knowledge through the development and delivery of superior learning systems, BS Computer Science students from STI College – Caloocan introduced an innovative synergy between traditional teaching method and technology.

Stimulated by the popular motion-based rhythm game series, Just Dance, Maria Cristina Estares, Jennifer Loplopoz, John Michael Ocampo, and Andre Christopher Sales with the supervision of their adviser Engr. Marcelo Varona, developed the Modernong Calibre Kali.”

The Modernong Calibre Kali is a unique and unconventional teaching aid designed for the subject Physical Education (PE) 3. It facilitates a more interactive and entertaining way of learning the sport and martial art, Arnis

PE 3 is composed of various physical activities that can be challenging for students who can’t keep up at a normal pace. This requires a lot of time for practice squeezed in an individual’s tight schedule. With this, we thought of how students can learn the art of Arnis at their own pace with a unique software to guide them through.

The system is comprised of modules based on the course syllabus of PE 3: Arnis and makes use of an Xbox One Kinect technology. One of the modules include an instructors demo and a tutorial with gesture recognition where students can mimic and follow the animated movements stored in the system, similar to Just Dance. Apart from the lessons, the system has assessment, evaluation, and progress tracking that makes learning more interactive and entertaining.

The team behind the project went all-out and put forth their best possible effort and resources for this study as they know it will benefit both the instructors and the students enrolled in the PE 3 subject.

Proving that there can also be fun in learning, the developers of the Modernong Calibre Kali finished their thesis with flying colors. “We all started from scratch, and thankfully, after almost a year of coding, testing and developing the system, we made it!, Cristina concluded.
