STI College Olympians Make a Remarkable Comeback August 19, 2011
The STI College Olympians started strong in the opening match of the 11th season of the National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges, and Universities (NAASCU) as they powered through a monumental 90–72 victory over defending champions University of Manila's (UM) Hawks held on July 29, 2011 at the Makati Coliseum.
Fueled by the drive to make a comeback this year, the STI Olympians improved their line and formed a solid foundation by playing strong defense. "This year, we are focused on stealing the championship. We are training hard and ensuring that our players will always be in their best condition every game," shares Mhel Garrido, officer-in-charge of STI's Sports Development group.
The Olympians' powerhouse defense forced the Hawks turnovers which they easily turned into baskets. Cagayan de Oro-native Maclean Sabellina led the Olympians with a double-double, 23-point and 12-rebound record. Sealing the deal and making it difficult for the defending champs were veterans Norman Ihalas, Jasper Melano, Ivan Moreno, Lester Bocablo, and RK Morales.
With this year's theme, "Soaring to the Greater Heights," the 11th NAASCU participants are: Our Lady of Fatima University, AMA, City University of Pasay, New Era University, Informatics International College, University of Manila, Centro Escolar University, STI, St. Clare College of Caloocan, and Trace College Los Baños.
